Protecting the Wheatsheaf

Monday, 03 March 2014 11:49

We are keen to protect the much loved Wheatsheaf Pub from being turned into another mini-supermarket. Local people from all backgrounds have shown their support and we have worked with them and colleagues at the Town Hall to register the Pub as an 'Asset of Community Value' and give the building local listing status.

Keeping our Council Tax Low

Friday, 28 February 2014 00:00

We will always charge the least we can and deliver the best we are able to. We've made efficiency savings at the Town Hall, merging departments, reducing senior staff, sharing services with other Boroughs and working with business and the voluntary sector to deliver quality frontline services at a low as possible cost.

Opening new schools, raising standards

Friday, 28 February 2014 00:00

We have created new school places and backed the opening of new schools to increase parental choice, while 94 per cent of our schools are rated 'Good' or "Outstanding' by Ofsted.

We're seeing the transformation of north Battersea and Wandsworth, with significant investments in our other town centres. More than 25,000 new permanent jobs are being created by the redevelopment of Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. We are working to ensure these benefit the whole borough.

We have increased investment in maintaining our roads and pavements and are offering residents the opportunity to reduce speed limits on residential roads to 20mph. Crime rates have fallen and Wandsworth remains the safest inner London Borough.

Securing better transport for all

Friday, 28 February 2014 00:00

We've seen upgrades to six of our main railway stations, longer trains on Southern services from Balham, the launch of a new direct link from Clapham Junction to Docklands, new rolling stock on the District Line and are set to bring the Northern Line to Battersea. At the same time, 'Boris Bikes' have arrived in the Borough and river transport is being improved.

One-third of the new homes built in the Borough in the last four years are designated 'affordable', (with more affordable housing being delivered than in neighbouring Lambeth) and a further 1,600 new affordable homes in the pipeline. We're also investing £100 million over the next few years to improve our housing estates.

Wandsworth has the highest rate of growth in the capital. The Council is working across the Borough from Battersea to Roehampton to bring jobs and apprenticeships to young people from all backgrounds. We have one of the highest proportions of our population in work of any authority in the country and we aim to increase employment rate that further.
