Platform extension welcomed at Putney railway station aplumb

Thamesfield Conservative Councillors have welcomed Network Rail’s announcement to increase platform lengths at Putney station and introduce more carriages.  The announcement follows a sustained lobbying campaign from Councillors and Justine Greening.

The plans will see train lengths upped from 8 to 10 cars on the Wessex route from Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside by December 2011.  At Putney station the proposal is to extend Platforms 2 and 3 (central platforms) by 38.7m at the London end and to extend Platform 4 (backing onto Upper Richmond Road) by 36.0m also at the London end.

Councillor Rosemary Torrington said:  “This is really welcome news it’s just a shame that it’s taken so long to get action from Network Rail.”

Thamesfield Councillors are also lobbying Network Rail to open up a station/platform entrance on Oxford Road.  Councillor Jim Madden said:  “This proposal will  really benefit people who live and work in around Upper Richmond Road and in the vicinity of Fawe Park Road.”  Cllr Lister added:  “This would be another means of reducing congestion within the station concourse.  We are actively exploring this idea, and the need to provide disabled access to the station, and will report further with any news.”
